TWENTY-ONE

STOLAS

“Soon, Stolas.”

The words felt like a dream. A terrible, teasing dream designed to taunt, created by the magus who held me captive. It sounded like her, like the one I had so many doubts about, the one who screwed with things that shouldn’t be screwed with and managed to make things … if not right, then better, somehow.

Where was she now and what was her name … things floated away from me at an alarming rate as if they were pulling memories from my head like threads of sugar from cotton candy. I would remember it in one of the moments that seemed to stretch into infinity and back. I’d remember and then something else would slip away, and on and on.

They caught me out of my shop, while I was doing something for the woman whose name I couldn’t remember. Caught me somewhere doing something I wasn’t supposed to be doing. What did I find? What had been so terrible that they had to rip me apart and stuff me in this fucking crystal? Only, it wasn’t a crystal, was it? This housing was different, felt different. It was wrong, it was obscene.

Three pieces? More? What were the other parts of me doing? Were they able to think, to feel? Did they wonder, as I now wondered, where they were? Or had their memories been stripped from them?

What had I been doing?

“Soon, Stolas.”

“Korri,” I breathed.

“What do you do, demon? Concentrate! The magic we are working is important and I didn’t pay the Lodge for a layabout.”

I snarled at the magus, but it did me no good. I was trapped in whatever thing she held me.

“Concentrate!” she said, her lined face drawn tight. She was always angry, this one. Shouting, screaming, ripping, tearing. “I didn’t pay to—”

“I know,” I said.

She cackled. “You look better naked,” she said, and my clothes were gone. She had all the control and I, none. The bitch. Not the same one that had held me long ago, but she knew the other one. Somehow, she knew.

“My sister,” she said. “She lost you. You killed her but here you are working for me. You do as I say when I say it. You obey. And when I tell you to pour your demon’s damned power into this spell, you do it!”

Another rant just like the first rant. Just like the next, soon enough.

I gave her the power as she asked, though I throttled it as much as I dared. Let her think I wasn’t up to her standards, let her think I was broken. Let her believe none of it, I didn’t care.

“Soon, Stolas.”

I spied movement out of the corner of my eye but didn’t dare look. What was it? A crack? The tiniest splinter in my cage?

“I like it when you get hard. Why aren’t you hard?”

Whenever we resisted them, they hurt us. The magic that bound us also served to make us compliant. And though my body, despite my will, rose to her command it didn’t … it didn’t completely comply.
